The Mission Command Battle Lab (MCBL) here conducted a Science and Technology (S&T)-based course at the Command and General Staff College (CGSC). Ten students participated in the pilot during the first term of the CGSC elective period, March 27 to April 27... Command and General Staff School leadership endorsed the S&T idea and the Department of Tactics sponsored the course which focused on exposing CGSC students to science and technology relevant to Mission Command. The Center for Army Lessons Learned recently deployed two analysts to Yerevan, Armenia, at the request of the U.S. Office of Defense Cooperation for a follow-on engagement to assist the Armenian Armed Forces in its adoption of mission command. The Armenian General Headquarters formed a Mission Command (MC) Task Force and is conducting a pilot program to determine how MC principles should be integrated into the force. Lessons and best practices from the pilot units are collected each quarter and used to make adjustments to the program. As part of this visit, CALL analysts provided a briefing on the military decision-making process with a focus on Step 4, Course of Action Analysis. The next engagement is tentatively scheduled for June 2017 to assist with the development of a formal lessons learned program for the Armenian Armed Forces.

Dr. Melissa Wolfe, a research psychologist at the Center for Army Leadership (CAL), participated in the First Cycle of Leadership Conferences hosted by the General Military Academy and Defense University Center of the Spanish Army held in Zaragoza, Spain, April 28, 2017. Dr. Wolfe presented a briefing entitled, “Leadership in Small Units,” and discussed the U.S. Army’s deliberate, continuous, and progressive approach to developing and maintaining effective leaders in small units and beyond. The conference was titled “Leadership and Crisis Management and Conflict.” The conference was a forum for civil-military discussions that included international speakers and focused on issues of leadership. The conference was attended by approximately 300 cadets, faculty, and military members from the Spanish General Military Academy, whose mission is to train and educate officers in the Army, Civil Guard, and Tri-Service Corps members of the Spanish Armed Forces.

The Army Leader Exchange (ALx) hosted a lecture by Lt. Gen. (R) Russel L. Honoré on Tuesday, May 2 at the Lewis and Clark Center, U.S. Army Combined Arms Center (CAC), Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Lt. Gen. (R) Honoré became one of the United State’s best-known military leaders in 2005 after spearheading the Task Force responsible for the massive search-and-rescue mission and the restoration of order in New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina.

The Mission Command Network describes the operational capabilities that must be provided within the context of the Army Operating Concept. The Army faces a complex world which demands 'expeditionary' forces - forces task organized and deployed on short notice to austere locations, capable of conducting operations immediately upon arrival. These forces will conduct expeditionary maneuver in order to win against increasingly capable and elusive enemies. Such maneuver will employ joint combined arms, air-ground forces quickly across multiple domains and extended distances. Expeditionary maneuver will combine military, inter-organizational, and multinational capabilities delivered from global, theater, and local resources. Hence we require an approach to mission command that fully integrates unified action partners, and all elements of power they can bring to bear.

The Mission Command Network is key to achieving this integration. The "Mission Command Network (MC Network)" is integrated mission command and LandWarNet capabilities, which enable commanders, leaders & soldiers to exercise mission command (the philosophy) and integrate all warfighting functions and Unified Action enablers (the warfighting function). It is an inherent component of the Joint Information Environment. The MC Network allows commanders to develop and maintain situational understanding, maneuver across domains and locations, and conduct joint combined arms operations to accomplish the mission. The Army Leadership Exchange (ALx) held an Army Leadership Exchange Panel, May 6. The Panel continued the ongoing professional discussion on 'Leadership Through a Changing Environment,' moving outside the military perspective and delving into "Authentic Leadership." The speakers included Mr. Bob Chapman (center), Chairman and CEO of Barry-Wehmiller Companies, and Mr. Simon Sinek (right), Author of 'Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't' and RAND Corporation adjunct staff member advising on matters of military innovation and planning. Both gentlemen are noted experts in authentic leadership both in practice and in theory. The Panel was led by Col.
