Professor Boaz Ganor, Dean and Ronald Lauder Chair for Counter-Terrorism at the Lauder School of Government, spoke at a presentation by the Army Leader Exchange on "The Art of Counter-Terrorism" on Aug. 17, 2017. The discussion at the Lewis and Clark Center, Fort Leavenworth, KS was open to all military and civilian personnel and dealt with the challenges of leadership in dealing with identifying the enemy/threat, understanding the rationale of terrorism, balancing public awareness and resilience and more. Major General Michael Kurilla, commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division, Maj. Gen. Brian Alvin, commanding general of the 63rd Regional Support Command, and Maj. Gen. James Mingus, director of the Mission Command Center of Excellence, participate in the latest pilot command course, Army Strategic Education Program - Command (ASEP-C). The new course is given quarterly to Army officers who are heading toward division command (and equivalents) and is designed to instruct them on advanced warfighting concepts that align more with challenges of the future. Mr. Gonzalo Pareja, product manager for the Tactical Mission Command (PdM TMC), addresses Command Post Computing Environment (CPCE) Limited Objective Experiment (LOE) participants. The event was hosted by the Mission Command Battle Lab (MCBL), Mission Command Capability Development Integration and Directorate (MC CDID) from 17-21 July 2017, and is part of the Army’s efforts to establish industry-like common hardware, software, and data standards. MC CDID and MCBL are dedicated to creating a Common Operating Picture (COP) of the battlefield that displays a similar “look and feel” across platforms.

Colonel John Vermeesch, Director, Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE) and other members of the CAPE leadership team shared the Army story with the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen of New York City. The meeting presented a unique opportunity to discuss the Army Profession and ethic with one of New York City's oldest professional organizations. Founded in 1785, the General Society continues to serve and improve the quality of life of the people of the City of New York. CAPE’s participation in the event also supported the USMA Superintendent’s strategic objective of outreach to NYC.

Michael Lundy, command general of CAC and Fort Leavenworth, participated in an Army Profession Leader Development Forum (APLDF) Wednesday, May 31. This APLDF (17-3) was primarily focused on issues within the civilian cohort. Traditionally APLDF members critically examine leader development initiatives and programs, discuss issues and draw upon their experience and judgment to advise the commanding general of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. James Benn, Deputy Director of the Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate (CADD) speaks with 50 doctrine developers from the Colombian Army during a recent Doctrine Subject Matter Expert (SME) Exchange with the Colombian Army. From 15-26 May 2017, CADD SMEs assisted 50 doctrine developers from the Colombian Army in Bogota to finalize their Army Doctrine Reference Publications (Manuales Referencia Fundamentales del Ejército). These documents are scheduled to be published during the Colombian Army birthday celebration on 7 August 2017. Based upon the US - Colombian Army Bilateral Staff Talks this year, one of the agreed-to-actions committed the U.S. to assist the Colombian Army in the transformation of their doctrine program adopting the U.S. Army doctrine hierarchy of publications and aligning portions of their doctrine principles with U.S. and NATO information.

The Mission Command Battle Lab (MCBL) here conducted a Science and Technology (S&T)-based course at the Command and General Staff College (CGSC). Ten students participated in the pilot during the first term of the CGSC elective period, March 27 to April 27... Command and General Staff School leadership endorsed the S&T idea and the Department of Tactics sponsored the course which focused on exposing CGSC students to science and technology relevant to Mission Command. The Center for Army Lessons Learned recently deployed two analysts to Yerevan, Armenia, at the request of the U.S. Office of Defense Cooperation for a follow-on engagement to assist the Armenian Armed Forces in its adoption of mission command. The Armenian General Headquarters formed a Mission Command (MC) Task Force and is conducting a pilot program to determine how MC principles should be integrated into the force. Lessons and best practices from the pilot units are collected each quarter and used to make adjustments to the program. As part of this visit, CALL analysts provided a briefing on the military decision-making process with a focus on Step 4, Course of Action Analysis. The next engagement is tentatively scheduled for June 2017 to assist with the development of a formal lessons learned program for the Armenian Armed Forces.

Dr. Melissa Wolfe, a research psychologist at the Center for Army Leadership (CAL), participated in the First Cycle of Leadership Conferences hosted by the General Military Academy and Defense University Center of the Spanish Army held in Zaragoza, Spain, April 28, 2017. Dr. Wolfe presented a briefing entitled, “Leadership in Small Units,” and discussed the U.S. Army’s deliberate, continuous, and progressive approach to developing and maintaining effective leaders in small units and beyond. The conference was titled “Leadership and Crisis Management and Conflict.” The conference was a forum for civil-military discussions that included international speakers and focused on issues of leadership. The conference was attended by approximately 300 cadets, faculty, and military members from the Spanish General Military Academy, whose mission is to train and educate officers in the Army, Civil Guard, and Tri-Service Corps members of the Spanish Armed Forces.
