NFTF - Operationalizing Knowledge Management in an Army Service Component Command

This article is an account of the experience and initiative that drove major change in the U.S. Army South Knowledge Management (KM) program from 2017-19. This record of enhanced practices and procedures is based on both doctrine and best practices. Although compiled from the capabilities and requirements of a single unit, the insights and lessons have applicability across the force, certainly with other Army Service component commands.

NFTF - Rapid Equipping Force: The Commander's Option to Quickly Address Equipment Gaps

When there is an equipment (hardware, software, weapon, tool, etc.) capability gap, what solutions does a unit have at its fingertips? The United States Army provides units with two means to solve the issue: the Operational Needs Statement (ONS) and the Rapid Equipping Force (REF) 10-Liner Request for Capability. If the need is urgent, the REF 10-Liner is the way to go. The purpose of this article is to explain the REF 10-Liner and detail the very easy-to-complete form in order to help Soldiers and leaders.

NFTF - Refocusing Counterinsurgency (COIN) Centric Fire Support

The United States and its allies must close the fire support gap to achieve a position of maneuver advantage if faced with a large-scale combat operation against a conventional peer threat. The gap must not only be closed in terms of organizing, equipping and manning. Commanders and their staffs must close this gap by refocusing the COIN-centric fire support mindset and begin to synthesize the targeting effort through the lens of a combined arms formation.

NFTF - Setting Mission Command in a Geographic Theater U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC)

Establishing mission command systems is an essential component to setting a geographical theater for military operations and is a core function of the Unites States Army Pacific (USARPAC). Doing so in advance of any contingency operation ensures continuous mission command, and allows headquarters and facilities to be identified, emplaced, and systems to be rehearsed routinely in order to seamlessly command and control Army forces throughout a theater.

NFTF - Tactical Staff Considerations for Winning In a Denied, Degraded, and Disrupted Space Operational Environment

This paper discusses the space equities within the electromagnetic spectrum, specifically the military's reliance on Global Positioning System (GPS); satellite communications (SATCOM); and space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance platforms, as well as the corresponding mitigating tasks necessary to retain the Unites States' advantage in space. The ability of the U.S. Army to operate in a D3SOE ensures increased levels of force protection for its Soldiers while preserving its means to deliver devastating effects upon enemy forces.

NFTF - Tactical-Level Multinational Interoperability During Operations Resolute Support and Freedom's Sentinel

A Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) military analyst (forward) embedded with the 264th Engineer Clearance Company (Spartans) and developed observations base on their operations in support of Operations Resolute Support and Freedom's Sentinel. The Spartans provided CALL with these insights while conducting combat patrols on area denial and route clearance, as well as experiencing a look at a "Bloodhound" package.

NFTF - The Engagement is the Mission

Soldiers that will serve as combat advisors have to recognize that the engagement is the mission and choose to make that paradigm shift. Five areas for combat advisors to focus their energy during and frame their understanding of combat advising are clearly understanding the objectives, wargaming, interpreter preparation, understanding what the questions of the key leader mean, and understanding the importance of the recorder. The application of these baseline combat advising concepts will result in combat advising success.

NFTF - The Front of Military Education and Security Cooperation

Security cooperation is a multifaceted effort that requires more than just planning to develop the skills of a foreign security force. In 2017, the National Defense Authorization Act created the DOD Security Cooperation Workforce Development Program (SCWDP) to develop and manage supporting security programs, improve the quality of the security cooperation workforce, and ensure personnel have the appropriate level of expertise and experience to perform their missions.

NFTF - The Role of the NCO Inside the BCT Command Post

An NCO's role in a command post is truly no different than his or her role at the tactical level. NCO's organize Soldiers for the mission by creating a battle roster that reflects the Soldiers and equipment assigned. NCO's identify the training that needs to be conducted in each of the categories of a command post and create teams responsible for specific tasks that support the overall collective tasks of establishing the command post.
