Dr. Jim Martin, Dean of Academics for the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., speaks about his experiences being stationed in Germany in the early 1990s during the Day of German Unity event Oct. 3 at J.W. Crancers Event Space in downtown Leavenworth. Martin talked about his deployment during Operation Desert Storm from where he was stationed in Germany. He said that because of the uncertainty of the deployment, some of the Soldiers were sending their families back to the U.S. but that he and a few others made the decision to leave their families in Germany because of the good relationship the American Soldiers and their families had with the local citizens. The event was hosted by the German Army Liaison Staff to the Combined Arms Center. The celebration marks the anniversary of when East and West Germany reunited to become the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990.
