Lawton/Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce visit Fort Leavenworth

Members of the Lawton/Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce posed for a group photo at the bust of Lt. Henry Flipper. Flipper was the first black officer to graduate from the United States Military Academy after the Civil War. Following his commission in 1877, Flipper was assigned to Fort Sill, Okla., where he is credited with reducing malaria by creating a drainage ditch to control stagnant water, thereby reducing the mosquito breeding area. The bust of Flipper is located in the Circle of Firsts at the Buffalo Soldier Monument.
