In May of 2018, 7,000 personnel from 162 organizations representing the militaries of the United States and nine NATO partners converged on five training sites in southern Germany as part of the U.S. Army’s first Joint Warfighting Assessment (JWA). The common goal was to advance their collective ability to overcome aggression from a near-peer competitor in Europe. In pursuit of this goal, they trained to fight as a single, cohesive, and multinational division against a near-peer adversary. This training produced numerous lessons, many of which are detailed throughout this publication, about how to foster interoperability and about which concepts and capabilities will enable multi-domain operations (MDO). JWA 18 was an important step forward for the Army as it seeks to adapt the force to the demands of a rapidly changing and complex world.

Mission Command Center of Excellence Director Maj. Gen. Douglas Crissman and Senior Enlisted Advisor Sgt. Maj. Christopher Prosser present the Superior Civilian Service Award to retiring MCCoE Chief of Operations Peter B. Benoit, Jr., at a ceremony at the Frontier Conference Center Dec. 19. Benoit officially retires Dec. 25 after more than 30 years of federal service with his last two years as the MCCoE CHOPS.

During their visit, Brig Watson shared an overview of the Land Warfare Centre with directors and representatives from MCCoE subordinate organizations.

Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) analysts recently traveled to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in support of the U.S. Military Training Mission effort to assist the Saudi Armed Forces (SAF) in developing a lessons learned program. The CALL team provided briefings and facilitated discussions with a selected group of 33 SAF officers on the elements of a lessons learned program and how it can be used to improve operations, training, and education across their force.

CALL conducted a Lessons Learned Training Contact Team engagement at the Jordanian Center for Strategic Studies and Lessons Learned (JCSSLL) in Jordan, 7-9 January 2018. The team met with the new JCSSLL director, MG Mukhlid al-Zyood, and principal staff officers to provide briefings on CALL and the Army Lessons Learned Program, facilitate discussions on administering a LL program, and assist with collection planning for the Eager Lion exercise being held in April. This event was part of a long-standing partnership between the two organizations that began in 2010 and seeks to increase cooperation and interoperability between the JAF and the U.S. Army.
