Dr. Melissa Wolfe, a research psychologist at the Center for Army Leadership (CAL), participated in the First Cycle of Leadership Conferences hosted by the General Military Academy and Defense University Center of the Spanish Army held in Zaragoza, Spain, April 28, 2017. Dr. Wolfe presented a briefing entitled, “Leadership in Small Units,” and discussed the U.S. Army’s deliberate, continuous, and progressive approach to developing and maintaining effective leaders in small units and beyond. The conference was titled “Leadership and Crisis Management and Conflict.” The conference was a forum for civil-military discussions that included international speakers and focused on issues of leadership. The conference was attended by approximately 300 cadets, faculty, and military members from the Spanish General Military Academy, whose mission is to train and educate officers in the Army, Civil Guard, and Tri-Service Corps members of the Spanish Armed Forces.

The Army Leader Exchange (ALx) hosted a lecture by Lt. Gen. (R) Russel L. Honoré on Tuesday, May 2 at the Lewis and Clark Center, U.S. Army Combined Arms Center (CAC), Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Lt. Gen. (R) Honoré became one of the United State’s best-known military leaders in 2005 after spearheading the Task Force responsible for the massive search-and-rescue mission and the restoration of order in New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina.

Brig. Gen. James Mingus, Director, Mission Command Center of Excellence, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, discusses the mission command philosophy at the Mission Command Conference held at West Point, New York, April 19-20, 2017. Soon-to-be-commissioned cadets from the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy and Reserve Officers' Training Corps programs from various universities across the country attended the conference. The conference is an annual event organized by the Simon Center for the Professional Military Ethic as a capstone experience in a cadet's military ethic education, and focuses on mission command in the modern day.

The Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army referred the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) to Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE) as a resource for ways to promote professional conduct and the development of a professional ethic. Army senior leaders participated in the Mission Command Network Summit IV at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., April 11, 2017. Attendees included representatives from U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM); U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC); TRADOC Centers of Excellence; Army National Guard; U.S. Army Reserve, key United States Department of the Army staff; selected corps, division, and brigade headquarters; training centers; theater armies; joint partners; and multi-national partners (e.g. UK, Canada, Australia, France, and Germany). The Summit provided an opportunity for the participants to discuss concerns and recommended solutions for issues such as network training, integration and priorities.

The Character Development Project initiative is being led by the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE), part of the Army Combined Arms Center and Army Training and Doctrine Command. The purpose of the project is to develop and publish the Army's approach for assessing character for all Soldiers and Army Civilians to ensure that Army professionals consistently demonstrate their commitment and resilience to live by and uphold the Army Ethic.
