Brig. Gen. Christopher P. Hughes presents the Bronze Star Medal to Spec. Jason Ortega for his actions in Afghanistan from September 2013 - February 2014. Most notably, on Feb. 24, 2014, SPC Ortega and military working dog ,Jill, were part of an element assisting in the search of compounds in Nani Village. They were ambushed with small arms fire by insurgent forces. Spec. Ortega pinned Jill behind cover to keep her safe. He saw that the EOD technician who had been clearing the area with him was wounded and exposed. Spec. Ortega left his cover to recover his fellow warrior and drag him to safety. That is when Spec. Ortega realized he was wounded and he, along with Jill, were evacuated for care.

The TRADOC Governance Forum on 12-13 Aug 14 at the Lewis and Clark Center provides a method for TRADOC senior leaders to monitor assigned TRADOC missions and convey guidance, priorities and intent across multiple communities. The three forums held in the LCC are the Army Leader Development Forum (ALDF), Training Integration Forum (TIF), and TRADOC Quarterly Forces Review (QRF).

Fort Leavenworth was honored by a visit from several WWII Navy (CASU) Veterans, Friday 25 July 2014. The CGSC Department of Military History representatives got a chance for some questions and answers with the veterans and their families after they were given an overview of the college.

The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation’s Command & General Staff Officer Course Class of 2014-2015 begins with a Flag Ceremony honoring the nations participating Wednesday, July 16, at 2 p.m. in the Benning Club’s Regimental Room. Kazakhstan National Defense University (KZ NDU) Opens New Campus in Astana Director of the George C. Marshall Center for Security Studies Lieutenant General Keith Dayton (Ret.) represented the United States at the July 4 opening of the new National Defense University facilities. He observed NDU graduation ceremonies, participated in a conference on professional military education in Kazakhstan, and officially transferred the "U.S. Warfighting Resource Center" classroom to the NDU commandant. The Resource Center donation included over 100 textbooks and 5 military journal subscriptions contributed by the Army War College, the Combined and General Staff College, Air University, and the Marshall Center.
