Major General John S. Kem, provost for Army University and deputy commandant of the Command and General Staff College, spoke at the 2017 Executive Leadership Summit - cohosted by the KU School of Business and the CGSC Foundation, Inc. - Friday, February 17 at the BEST Conference Center at the University of Kansas Edwards Campus in Overland Park, Kan. The summit was themed "Developing the Leaders of Tomorrow" and brought together leaders in defense, business and academia to address key leadership challenges in a dynamic and complex world. The Command and General Staff College inducted three international graduates who have led their country's army or defense forces into its International Hall of Fame on Oct. 6 at the Lewis and Clark Center. The induction brings to 266 the number of leaders who have been honored in the Hall of Fame from the nearly 8,000 international officers who have graduated from the college. The honorees included General Volker Wieker of Germany, Brigadier General Igor Gorgan of Moldova, and Brigadier General Mark Anthony Phillips of Guyana. Click the photo above to read more.

U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) held a Promotion ceremony for Major General John S. Kem, Provost, Army University; Deputy Commandant, CGSC. Maj. Gen. Kem was promoted on October 3, 2016 at the Lewis and Clark Center, Fort Leavenworth, KS and given the oath of office by Commanding General; U.S. Army Combined Arms Center (CAC); and Fort Leavenworth; Lt. Gen. Michael D. Lundy.

Lieutenant Colonel Brian North’s Making the Difficult Routine is the first focused study of the US Army’s capacity to rapidly change task organization in the summer and fall of 1944. North finds that a shared educational experience and a common foundation in doctrine were the key factors in the Army officer corps ability to reorganize large combat formations in the midst of intense combat. This study suggests that this capability was critical to the Army’s success in the European theater in 1944 and offers important insights for the US Army today. To download a copy, click here.

In the fall of 1864, a large Confederate force launched a major raid on Missouri. That raid would culminate in the Battle of Westport in Kansas City, a Union victory that effectively ended Confederate resistance in Missouri. Lt. Gen. Robert Brown gave his final farewell speech as commanding general of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center and Fort Leavenworth to the students attending the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Brown received Senate confirmation for his four-star promotion Thursday and relinquished command within hours of the notification. Brown will now depart and begin his new position as the Commanding General of the United States Army Pacific at Fort Shafter, Hawaii.
