Journalist and author Jim Michaels discussed his new book, "A Chance in Hell," with a group of students and CGSC faculty Wednesday in Marshall Auditorium. "A Chance in Hell" tells the story of the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, which turned around a desperate situation in the former al-Qaeda stronghold of Ramadi, Iraq, in 2006 through an unlikely alliance between then-Col. Sean MacFarland and an eccentric local sheikh. That resulted in the "Anbar Awakening" and the precipitous loss of support for al-Qaeda in Iraq during the surge of 2007-08. Michaels' book also is an extended study in the leadership of MacFarland, who is now Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center-Leader Development and Education here at Fort Leavenworth. Michaels also will participate in Thursday's media panel here at CGSC. |
