Guest Speaker
MG Mark Hertling
Tuesday, July 21, 2009 Eisenhower Auditorium, Lewis & Clark Center

MG Mark P. Hertling, Special Assistant to the TRADOC Commanding General, addressed students, faculty, and staff from the Command and General Staff College as part of the guest speaker program July 21.
MG Hertling shared his experiences and insights from his previous operational assignments, most recently as Commanding General, 1st Armored Division, during the time the division was deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom as the Multi-National Division-North.

MG Hertling provided a descriptive overview of the environment in which 1AD operated as MND-North.  Interwoven throughout his presentation were three key lessons:  the challenge of impact of weather on division operations, complex cultures in the operational environment, and the criticality of the division not fighting the same fight as the brigades.

The general reinforced the importance of “iron” majors on a division staff and described them as “decisive” in assisting the commander in decision-making.  He also recognized that majors on division-level staff shoulder the many frustrations and challenges associated with division missions and emphasized that a division staff must understand the unique tactical problem of the division echelon.  MG Hertling also emphasized the importance of understanding the modular Army, especially its impact on leader development.
