LTC Yingling, author of "A Failure in Generalship" addressed both ILE classes on April 2 to discuss what he believes are the most important tasks for field grade officers -- anticipating events and empowering subordinates to act wisely and boldly on the decentralized battlefields of the 21st century.
His presentation highlighted the factors shaping today's global security environment:Â proliferation of WMD, radicalized terrorism, globalization and the U.S. economic downturn, as well as historical examples of the military's failure to adapt to irregular warfare. |

| |
He concluded with what he sees as keys to moving forward -- that political intervention is necessary for reform, senior leader development is the most urgently needed reform, and taking action to build adaptive leaders is a key requirement. |
