Definition/Scope: (FM 1-02) Combat carried out with direct fire weapons, supported by indirect fire, airdelivered fires, and nonlethal engagement means. Close combat defeats or destroys enemy forces or seizes and retains ground. (FM 3-0) Warfare carried out on land in a direct-fire fight, supported by direct, indirect, and air-delivered fires.
