Bureau of Intelligence and Research
Definition/Scope: (JP 2-01) The Bureau of Intelligence and Research, INR, coordinates programs for intelligence, analysis, and research and produces intelligence studies and current intelligence analyses essential to foreign policy determination and execution. Some of their details include: overtly collect information relevant to US foreign policy concerns; produce and disseminate foreign intelligence relating to US foreign policy as required for the execution of the Secretary of State's responsibilities; disseminate, as appropriate, reports received from US diplomatic and consular posts; transmit reporting requirements of the IC to the chiefs of US missions abroad; support chiefs of missions in discharging their statutory responsibilities for direction and coordination of mission activities.
