Definition/Scope: FM 1-02 has been superceded by ADRP 1-02. (FM 1-02) A unit formation with subordinate elements arranged in a box or square, or two elements up and two elements back. It is a flexible formation that provides equal firepower in all directions. It is generally used when the enemy location is known. This formation can cause 50 percent of force to be decisively engaged at the same time, therefore limiting the combat power available to maneuver against an enemy. OLD VERSION A unit formation with subordinate elements arranged in a box or square or two elements up and two back. It is a flexible formation that provides equal fire power in all directions.
