Basque Fatherland and Liberty

Definition/Scope: (Dpt of State) Founded in 1959 with the aim of establishing an independent homeland based on Marxist principles in Spain’s Basque region and the southwestern French provinces of Labourd, Basse-Navarra, and Soule. Also known as Askatasuna, AKA Batasuna, AKA Ekin, Epanastatiki Pirines, AKA Euskal Herritarrok, AKA Euzkadi Ta Askatasuna, AKA Herri Batasuna, AKA Jarrai-Haika-Segi (KAS), AKA Popular Revolutionary Struggle (XAKI). The ETA is primarily involved in bombings and assinations of Spanish government officials, security and military forces, politicians, and judicial figures.
