Task Force 72

Definition/Scope: ( Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Forces, SEVENTH Fleet leads expeditionary Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Forces in support of SEVENTH Fleet operations. Also known as Task Force 72, Patrol and Reconnaissance Force SEVENTH Fleet’s Area of Responsibility encompasses over fifty six million square miles, extending from the Northern Pacific Ocean, bordering Russia, to the South China Sea and westward over the Indian Ocean from the southern tip of Africa to Tanzania. Task Force 72 is normally comprised of two patrol squadrons, totaling 11 Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft, together with two reconnaissance squadron detachments and SEVENTH Fleet special detachments and assigned surface ships. Over 1,100 personnel are assigned to Task Force 72. Major task groups under the operational control of Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Force SEVENTH Fleet are: the Okinawa Air Patrol Group (Task Group 72.2) consisting of a detachment of P-3 Orion aircraft deployed to Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan; the Japan Air Patrol Group (Task Group 72.4) consisting of a detachment of P-3C Orion aircraft deployed to Naval Air Facility Misawa, Japan; and the Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron ONE Detachment Kadena, Japan (Task Group 72.5). From February 2002 to July 2002 and again from Jun 2005 to the Present, Task Force 72 elements deployed to the Republic of the Philippines in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM-Philippines.
