Joint Fires Observer
Definition/Scope: (JP 3-09.3) (DOD) A trained Service member who can request, adjust, and control surface-to-surface fires, provide targeting information in support of Type 2 and 3 close air support terminal attack control, and perform autonomous terminal guidance operations. (Sill) A joint fires observer (JFO) is a service member that can request, adjust and control surface-to-surface fires, provide targeting information in support of Type 2 and 3 CAS terminal attack controls, and perform autonomous Terminal Guidance operations (TGO). (Navy) The Naval JFO trains select joint personnel with training in engaging targets with AC-130, naval surface fires, indirect surface fires and on procedures for providing timely and accurate targeting information to a qualified JTAC for Type 2 and 3 Close Air Support (CAS) Terminal Attack Controls, and conducting Terminal Guidance Operations (TGO).
