Definition/Scope: (FM 3-23.30) The M83 TA white smoke hand grenade is used for screening the activities of small units and for ground-to-air signaling. The components are: the body is a cylinder of thin sheet metal, 2.5 inches in diameter and 5.7 inches long, the filler is 11 ounces of terephthalic acid (TA), the fuse is an M201A1 and it weighs 16 ounces. The M83 TA produces a cloud of white smoke for 25 to 70 seconds. The grenade has a forest green body with light green markings, a light blue band, and a white top.
