Definition/Scope: (FM 3-23.30)The components of the M18 colored smoke hand grenade are: body is a sheet steel cylinder. The current and recent production configuration is one taped grenade bottom hole and no top emission holes. The filler is 11.5 ounces of colored smoke mixture (red, yellow, green, or violet), the fuse is a M201A1 and it weighs 19 ounces. The average soldier can throw the M18 grenade 35 meters. The grenade burns for 50 to 90 seconds with an average burn time of 60 seconds. The M18 grenade is light green with black markings. The top of the grenade indicates the smoke color. Burning type grenades burn oxygen. Standard protective masks filter particles but will not supply oxygen. Therefore, burning grenades should not be used in enclosed or confined spaces.
