Kabul International Airport

Definition/Scope: Kabul International Airport has an abbreviation of KAIA, an IATA code of KBL and an ICAO code of OAKB. The KBL was originally built in the 1960’s and controlled by the Soviets from 1979 through 1989 during the 10-year Afghanistan war. It was taken over by the Taliban in 1996 through 2001 when they were removed from power during Operation Enduring Freedom. Since then, mostly military forces resupplying the various armies located in Afghanistan have used it.
