Hamas Charter

Definition/Scope: The Hamas Charter also known as the Covenant is a religious document written on 18 August 1988. It contains 36 articles that describe the necessary actions to be taken and the views to be looked upon by Islamic militants. The charter describes the destruction of Israel and replaced with an Islamic Palestinian state. There is some uncertainty as of Dec 2009 as to the current charters status. In 2007 there was to be some key phrases rewritten but they were never reintroduced into the charter. The Covenant identifies Hamas as the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine and also considers its members to be Muslims who fear God and who will believe that Jihad is acceptable in the face of any oppressors.
