roving patrol
Definition/Scope: (FM 3-19.30) A mobile detachment of ground, sea, or air forces dispatched to gather information or carry out a security mission. These patrols instructions are given in writing to prevent confusion. These instructions are known as general orders, special orders and temporary orders. This type of guard is one that will move from point to point, staggered time patrol or just a wandering type of patrol. The importance of this is to prevent predictability by observers.
