operational theme

Definition/Scope: (FM 3-0) An operational theme describes the character of the predominant major operation within a land force commander's area of operations. The operational theme also provide a framework for categorizing the various types of operations described in joint doctrine. The operational theme helps convey the nature of the major operation to the force to facilitate common understanding of how the commander broadly intends to operate. The current themes are: Peacetime military engagement, Limited intervention, Peace operations, Irregular warfare, Major combat operations.
