Intelligence WFF

Definition/Scope: (JP 2-0) An element of the warfighting functions. (joint) The product resulting from the collection, processing, integration, evaluation, analysis, and interpretation of available information concerning foreign nations, hostile or potentially hostile forces or elements, or areas of actual or potential operations. The term is also applied to the activity which results in the product and to the organizations engaged in such activity. (ADP 3-0) The intelligence warfighting function is the related tasks and systems that facilitate understanding the enemy, terrain, and civil considerations. It includes the synchronization of collection requirements with the execution of tactical tasks such as reconnaissance, surveillance, and related intelligence operations. This warfighting function includes specific intelligence and communication structures at each echelon. (FM 3-0) The intelligence warfighting function is the related tasks and systems that facilitate understanding of the operational environment, enemy, terrain, and civil considerations. It includes tasks associated with intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations, and is driven by the commander. Intelligence is more than just collection. It is a continuous process that involves analyzing information from all sources and conducting operations to develop the situation. The intelligence warfighting function includes the following tasks: support to force generation; support to situational understanding; conduct ISR; provide intelligence support to targeting and information capabilities. FM 2-0 describes the intelligence warfighting function.
