Temporary Area of Operations

Definition/Scope: A geographical area that does not include airspace, usually defined by lateral, forward, and rear boundaries assigned to a commander, by a higher commander, in which he has temporary responsibility and the authority to conduct military operations for a defined period of time. After the defined period of time expires, the original commander of the geographical area will resume responsibility and the authority to conduct military operations. TAO is temporary battle space that will be owned by the requesting unit for a specified period of time and the actual owner of the battle space WILL NOT participate in the requesting units operations. All coordination in the TAO will be conducted through the temporary owner (requesting Unit).
