Definition/Scope: (FM 3-90.6) Survivability protects friendly forces from the effects of enemy weapons systems and from natural occurrences. Hardening of facilities and fortification of battle positions are active survivability measures. Military deception, OPSEC, and dispersion can increase survivability. COMMON All aspects of protecting personnel, weapons, and supplies while simultaneously deceiving the enemy. Encompasses planning and locating position sites, designing adequate overhead cover, analyzing terrain conditions and construction materials, selecting excavation methods, and countering the effects of direct and indirect fire weapons.
