supporting forces

Definition/Scope: (DOD) Forces stationed in, or to be deployed to, an area of operations to provide support for the execution of an operation order. Combatant command (command authority) of supporting forces is not passed to the supported commander. (Army ) Those units and elements whose missions are to perform logistical, intelligence, and administrative functions not as part of the operating forces.
