amphibious assault ship (general purpose)
Definition/Scope: (JP 1-02) A naval ship designed to embark, deploy, and land elements of a landing force in an assault by helicopters, landing craft, amphibious vehicles, and by combinations of these methods. OLD VERSION A ship designed to transport troops, equipment, and supplies to the landing area. In World War II troops transferred from the assault ship to the shore on amphibious assault craft (landing craft). Today troops are generally carried in troop-carrying helicopters. Designated as LSD (landing ship, dock).
