Definition/Scope: (FM 3-0) Peace building involves stability actions, predominately diplomatic and economic, that strengthen and rebuild governmental infrastructure and institutions in order to avoid a relapse into conflict. Peace building provides the reconstruction and societal rehabilitation in the aftermath of conflict that offers hope to the host-nation populace. Stability operations promote reconciliation, strengthen and rebuild civil infrastructures and institutions, build confidence, and support economic reconstruction to prevent a return to conflict. The ultimate measure of success in peace building is political, not military. OLD VERSION Postconflict actions, predominately diplomatic and economic, that strengthen and rebuild governmental infrastructure and institutions in order to avoid a relapse into conflict.
