Definition/Scope: (1a) Diffusion of fluid through a semipermeable membrane, as the wall of a living cell. (1b) The tendency of a solution to diffuse in such a manner until equally concentrated on both sides of the membrane. (2) A gradual, often unconscious process of absorption resembling fluid osmosis.
