Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command

Definition/Scope: The Army’s Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC) is headquartered at Scott AFB, Ill., and Ft. Eustis, Va. The mission of the SDDC is to provide global surface deployment and distribution services to meet the nations objectives. The command is responsible for surface transportation and is the interface between DOD shippers and the commercial transportation carrier industry. This includes movement of DOD member household goods and privately owned vehicles. SDDC is the nation’s largest customer to the moving industry with more than 500,000 household goods moves a year. SDDC provides command and control of the movement of troops and materiel to 24 strategic seaports worldwide. It was previously known as the Military Traffic Management Command, MTMC. The SDDC is an Army Service Component Command (ASCC) of the USTRANSCOM and a major subordinate command of the Army Material Command.. Some of its locations are: Fort Eustis, Kuwait, North Carolina, the Netherlands, Guam, Germany, Florida, Japan and Hawaii. Some of its key responsibilities include movement of household goods, road and rail traffic management and to provide C2 of the movement of troops and material. OLD VERSION SDDC provides ocean terminal, commercial ocean liner service and traffic management services to deploy, sustain and redeploy U.S. forces on a global basis. The command is responsible for surface transportation and is the interface between DOD shippers and the commercial transportation carrier industry. This includes movement of DOD member household goods and privately owned vehicles. SDDC is the nation's largest customer to the moving industry with more than 500,000 household goods moves a year. The command also provides transportation for troops and materiel to ports of departure in the U.S. and overseas and manages 24 ports worldwide, including military terminals at Sunny Point, N.C., and Concord, Calif.
