Definition/Scope: (JP 1-02) The product resulting from the collection, processing, integration, evaluation, analysis, and interpretation of available information concerning foreign nations, hostile or potentially hostile forces or elements, or areas of actual or potential operations. The term is also applied to the activity which results in the product and to the organizations engaged in such activity. (DOD) 1. The product resulting from the collection, processing, integration, analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of available information concerning foreign countries or areas. 2. Information and knowledge about an adversary obtained through observation, investigation, analysis, or understanding. See FM 34-1. (Marine Corps) In Marine Corps usage, intelligence is knowledge about the enemy or the surrounding environment needed to support decisionmaking. This knowledge is the result of the collection, processing, exploitation, evaluation, integration, analysis, and interpretation of available information about the battlespace and threat. (ADRP 2-0) The purpose of intelligence is to support commanders and staffs in gaining situational understanding of threats, terrain and weather, and civil considerations. Intelligence supports the planning, preparing, execution, and assessment of operations. The most important role of intelligence is to support commanders and decisionmakers. The Army generates intelligence through the intelligence warfighting function. OLD VERSION A collection of organizations, disciplines, and processes designed to produce and disseminate information and estimates pertaining to actual and potential enemies. (2) the collection, analysis, and dissemination of terrorism-related information.
