Definition/Scope: (ADRP 7-0) An after action review is a guided analysis of an organization?s performance, conducted at appropriate times during and at the conclusion of a training event or operation with the objective of improving future performance. It includes a facilitator, event participants, and other observers. Organizations conduct after action reviews (AARs) to identify unit strengths to be sustained and weaknesses that need to improve. They apply observations, insights, and lessons to future training and operations to improve not only task proficiency, but also the quality of the training event. AARs are best conducted throughout an exercise at appropriate times, rather than just at the end of the exercise, to allow Soldiers and their leaders to take immediate, in-stride corrective actions. AARs are not critiques. FM 7-0 has been superceded by ADP/ADRP 7-0. (FM 7-0) A guided analysis of an organization’s performance, normally conducted after a training event or an operation, with the objective of improving future performance. It includes a facilitator, event participants, and other observers. (FM 100-25). A method of providing feedback to units by involving participants in the training diagnostics process in order to increase and reinforce learning. An After Action Review is a professional discussion of an event, focused on performance standards, that enables the trainees to discover for themselves what happened, why it happened, and how to sustain strengths and improve weaknesses in performance. (CJCSM 3500.3B). A process designed by a commander or director to provide commanders direct feedback on the accomplishment of selected joint mission-essential tasks, conditions, and standards stated in terms of training objectives for the commander to evaluate training proficiency. 2. An analytical review of training events that enables the training audience, through a facilitated professional discussion, to examine actions and results during a training event.
