Definition/Scope: Army staff and managerial positions and organizations are grouped into like nomenclatures. S-1 – S-6 are the staff or office positions usually located at the Battalion and below commands. G-1 – G-8 are located at Brigade and higher positions. J-1 – J-9 are unique in that they are Joint positions that have all Department of Defense services in them. A G-3 branchs mission could be: advise and assist the Commander in matters pertaining to organization, training, planning and operational employment of forces. In both component and service (Type Commander) functions, the G-3 is structured and chartered to serve as the Commander's principal staff agency for the development and articulation of a wide spectrum of concepts, plans and polices; and to direct and supervise execution and/or implementation of those policies. An installation G-3 mission might be as follows: The G3 is the primary tasking authority for the command, and the Operations Branch provides oversight and day-to-day management of this function. In this capacity, it is responsible for the following: conduct staff action analysis, preparation, coordination, assignment, and tracking; coordinate and edit weekly situation reports to the CG, and maintain the master calendar, manage current operations including: recurring installation requirements, WIAS taskings, unforecasted and extraordinary events, and support to higher headquarters ongoing operations, manage all administrative functions for the G3 section including: evaluation reports (OER, NCOER, Civilian), awards, additional duties, supply and budget functions, MEDPROS, etc. OLD VERSION Division-level or higher.
