Retired Major French honored for Infantry contributions

David W. French, Retired Army Major, recently received the Order of Saint Maurice medallion and an EST2000 commemorative coin for his work with the Army's weapons simulation system.

30Nov09 - David W. French, a defense contractor and retired Army Major, was inducted Nov. 23 into the Order of Saint Maurice. A joint venture between the National Infantry Association and U.S. Army Infantry Center, the award recognizes individuals who have contributed significantly to the Infantry and demonstrated the highest standards of integrity, moral character, professional competence and dedication to duty.

French was honored for nearly 33 years of outstanding support to the United States Army Infantry - 26 years as a Military Intelligence officer and seven years following his U.S. Army retirement as a defense contractor. The award citation indicates his most notable achievement in support of the Infantry was directing the development and distribution of the Engagement Skills Trainer 2000, an individual- and crew-served weapons simulation used by Army, National Guard, Army Reserve, Marines and some law enforcement personnel around the world. The EST 2000 uses exactly replicated weapons - from small arms to grenade launchers - connected to a pneumatic and laser system that simulates weapon recoil and records shooting accuracy.

In presenting the award, TCM-Virtual's Col. Henry St-Pierre recognized French's leadership role in providing soldiers "an incredibly useful tool." "You have been key in making that happen," he said of French's role with the EST2000. St-Pierre also presented French with a commemorative coin from the EST2000 manager at Fort Drum in New York - a token of appreciation from one of the thousands who benefit from the weapons simulation system.

Col. Henry St-Pierre (left) presents the Order of Saint Maurice medallion to David W. French, Retired Army Major.

French expressed his appreciation to family, friends and coworkers who helped with the EST2000's success. "I certainly didn't do it by myself," he said, adding that he was honored just to be nominated for the Order of Saint Maurice. "To actually receive this award is one of the highlights of my life.

Col. Millar joins prestigious Order of the Spur

Col. Jack Millar is the newest member of the Order of the Spur, a special Army recognition for Cavalry members.

In a surprise Oct. 30th ceremony at Fort Leavenworth, Combined Arms Center-Training representatives inducted Col. Jack Millar into the Order of the Spur.

The Order of the Spur is an Army tradition reserved for Cavalry members who serve during combat or complete a "Spur Ride."

Millar, Director of the Army's National Simulation Center at Fort Leavenworth, actually earned the spurs in 1991 while serving with the Seventh U.S. Corps during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. As the Squadron Fire Support Officer, he trained the Cavalry squadron's First and Colt Teams prior to combat and then provided exceptional fire support at the tank battle at 73 Easting. With redeployments and personnel changes following the war, Millar was never awarded his spurs.

In presenting the spurs, Col.(P) Paul Funk II told Millar that he was proud to fix the oversight from the 1990s. The CAC-T deputy commander added that Millar had earned this very special Cavalry honor for his distinguished service in the desert sands of Iraq and before that in Bamberg, Germany.
