GEN William S. Wallace,
Commanding General United States Army Training and Doctrine Command Fort Monroe, VA
Topic: Farewell Address to CGSC
Gen. William S. Wallace addressed students, faculty and staff of the US Army Command and General Staff College Oct 20 at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. This was Gen. Wallace's final presentation to the College prior to his retirement in December. During his address he shared his insights about "what was and what is" garnered from his 40 years of military service. Noting much has changed since he was a CGSC student in 1983, he said the "change, in my judgment, took place largely because of technology." Gen. Wallace said we now are in an era of persistent conflict where ground forces dominate the landscape, but he emphasized the human dimension of the force must not be ignored - "the Army is people." Speaking to more than 1200 student officers, faculty and staff he ended his remarks with some of his thoughts on leadership noting he is handing over the "reins to you...I look forward to the leadership you will provide."
