| LTG Lloyd J. Austin III, Commanding General XVIII Airborne Corps and former Commander of Multi-National Corps Iraq, was joined by his G2, COL Jim Phelps; G3, COL Jeff Bailey; and his G5, COL Mike Culpeper, during a presentation May 14 in the Eisenhower Auditorium to staff and faculty of CGSC. LTG Austin discussed his assessment of Iraq at the beginning of the XVIII Airborne Corps' rotation and the tools he used to communicate his vision. He highlighted the key MNC-I operations from March 2008 through February 2009. He concluded his remarks with an assessment of the current situation in Iraq. Interwoven throughout the presentation were three key lessons: the importance of the commander's vision (and methods of communicating it), the challenge of combined operations, and the importance of the corps as the echelon that translates strategic guidance into tactical action. |
