Maj. Gen. Thomas S. James, commanding general of the 7th Infantry Division, was the guest speaker for the 2017 School for Advanced Military Studies graduation. James told attendees he distinctly remembers sitting at his SAMS graduation ceremony 20 years ago. He said the school develops leaders who can think and who will be a valued commodity by their commanders.

Lt. Col. Sergiu Cirimpei, a special forces officer with the Moldovan military receives his masters' hood upon graduating from the 2017 School for Advanced Military Studies program, on May 25. Cirimpei graduated from the Command and General Staff School in 2016 and immediately began the SAMS program. Presenting his hood is Maj. Gen. John Kem, deputy commandant for the Command and General Staff College and Provost for Army University, along with Col. James Market, 15th director for the School for Advanced Military Studies. Cirimpei will return home after two years of schooling at Fort Leavenworth.

Exercise EAGLE OWL is the largest joint staff college exercise in the world bringing 200 British officers to Fort Leavenworth twice yearly for joint exercises with their U.S. counterparts. The two nations have conducted EAGLE OWL for the past ten years with the most recent exercise currently underway at Fort Leavenworth. According to the agreement, Exercise EAGLE OWL is a recurring twice-yearly training event that supports the execution and sustainment of a comprehensive Combined Arms Military Operation International Activities Program and is reciprocated by an annual deployment of U.S. students to join the United Kingdom's Staff Ride to Normandy (Exercise EURO OWL). These exercise exchanges promote allied interoperability, improving the capacity to operate together and fostering an environment of improved defense capabilities for allies and friends.

Maj. Gen. John S. Kem, provost of the Army University and deputy commandant of the Command and General Staff College and Air Vice Marshal Christopher J. Luck, MBE, Commandant of the United Kingdom's Joint Services Command and Staff College sign a partnering arrangement that will extend the conduct of Exercise EAGLE OWL for five additional years. The Mission Command Battle Lab (MCBL) here conducted a Science and Technology (S&T)-based course at the Command and General Staff College (CGSC). Ten students participated in the pilot during the first term of the CGSC elective period, March 27 to April 27... Command and General Staff School leadership endorsed the S&T idea and the Department of Tactics sponsored the course which focused on exposing CGSC students to science and technology relevant to Mission Command. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joseph L. Woods conducts a training class on the Military Decision Making Process model on May 03, 2017 at Fort Leavenworth, KS. The class was given to ensure standardization, content, and format were synchronized for the training audiences during upcoming Warfighter Exercises. The Military Decision Making Process (MDMP) is a United States Army seven-step process for military decision-making in both tactical and garrison environments. It is indelibly linked to Troop Leading Procedures and Operations orders. Chief Warrant Officer 2 Woods is currently serving as the Intelligence Technical Officer Observer Coach Trainer for Operations Group Foxtrot.
