COL Daniel S. Roper

Director, U.S. Army and Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Center

Colonel Daniel S. Roper is Director of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  The Center improves counterinsurgency capabilities through research of best practices, improvement of doctrine, training and education, and by frequent collaboration with interagency and international partners.  In his capacity as Director, Colonel Roper has conducted a number of counterinsurgency assessments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He is a 1982 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and holds a Masters of Science in Nuclear Physics from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.  He also holds two Masters of Military Art and Science from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and is a graduate of the Advanced Operational Arts Studies War College Fellowship program.

During his 26-year military career, Col. Roper has held a variety of command and staff positions in the United States and overseas and served on both the Army and Joint Staffs in the Pentagon.  He has commanded at the battery, battalion, and brigade levels and served as an instructor in the School of Advanced Military Studies.  He was Chief of Operations and Intelligence for the Coalition Forces Land Component Command Deep Operations Cell in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Colonel Roper has been published in a number of professional journals including Parameters, Military Review, Field Artillery, Armor, and the Strategic Studies Institute.  Among his awards are the Defense Superior Service Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, three Joint Meritorious Unit Awards,  Joint Chiefs of Staff and Army Staff Identification Badges, and Airborne and Air Assault Badges.
