U.S. Army Counterinsurgency Center
The Counterinsurgency Center is a subordinate organization of the Army Irregular Warfare Fusion Cell and the Mission Command Center of Excellence, U.S. Army Combined Arms Center. Its mission is to
provide Doctrine, Organization, Training, Material, Leader Development and Education, Personnel, and Facilities (DOTMLPF) solutions applicable to counterinsurgency environments in order to improve ground forces’ capability to execute and succeed in counterinsurgency operations globally.
Origins of the Counterinsurgency Center
In 2006, U.S. Army Combined Arms Center Commander, LTG David Petraeus, and the Marine Corps Combat Development Center (MCCDC) Commander, Lt. Gen. James Mattis established the Counterinsurgency Center In response to a need to better educate and train all U.S. ground forces on the principles and practices of counterinsurgency, and to integrate counterinsurgency efforts among the services. Another key task was to facilitate the implementation of FM3-24 Counterinsurgency, through educational seminars, training teams, conferences, research, outreach, collaboration, and collection and dissemination of counterinsurgency lessons learned.
Since its establishment, the Counterinsurgency Center has expanded to focus on successful counterinsurgency doctrinal practice in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as study and analysis of current and emerging insurgencies worldwide.
