Leading in a Culture of Change- Michael FullanRecommendation from BG Jerry G. Beck, Jr. and Mr. John Plifka: An easy read that incorporates a wide array of leadership  theorists (Welch, Collins, Barker etc). Fullan presents an extremely easy to understand framework of leadership that correlates incredibly well with FM 6-22. He even discusses how the Army conducts what he calls knowledge creation and sharing via our AARs – a highly sought after practice by the business/corporate world. His framework is based on Moral Purpose (Army Values) and works towards internal and external commitment.

I believe it is a good read for the leaders inside the Company level formation and one that they can relate to immediately. Â
The Human Element: Productivity, Self-Esteem, and the Bottom Line- Will SchultzÂRecommendation from Mr. John Powell: A foundation book for me is "The Human Element" by Will Schutz. The thrust of the book is self awareness, improving relationships, the organization, and productivity.
The Lionheads- Josiah BuntingÂRecommendation from COL Kelly Kruger: A wonderful book on leadership that was so misunderstood when it first came out that the Army ran Josiah Bunting out of the service. A wonderful read about what I think was the 9th Division in Viet Nam.

The Warriors: Reflections on Men in Battle- J. Glenn GrayÂRecommendation from COL Pat Sweeney: A philosophical meditation on what warfare does to us and an examination of the reasons soldiers act as they do. Gray explains the attractions of battle—the adrenaline rush, the esprit de corps—and analyzes the many rationalizations made by combat troops to justify their actions. In the end, Gray notes, "War reveals dimensions of human nature both above and below the acceptable standards for humanity."
This Kind of War: The Classic Korean War History- T.R. FehrenbachÂRecommendation from COL Bob Tipton: For junior officers, This Kind of War by T.R. Fehrenbach is one of the best reads from my perspective to understand the tragic results of poor leadership and not maintaining readiness. I required all of officers in my battalion to read this - specifically because I thought it was one of the best leader development reads.
Up Front- Bill MauldinÂRecommendation from Mr. Charles Guyette: Sir, Up Front, by the Cartoonist Bill Mauldin. If you read it and don't laugh, you don't understand leadership from the Soldier's perspective.
Warrior: An Autobiography- Ariel Sharon and David ChanoffÂRecommendation from COL Stafan Banach: Excellent read for all levels of command in war.
We were Soldiers Once...And Young: Ia Drang--The Battle That Changed The War In Vietnam- Harold G. Moore and Joseph L. GallowayRecommendation from COL Pat Sweeney: This devastating account presents a picture of men facing the ultimate challenge and dealing with it in ways they would have found unimaginable only a few hours earlier. It reveals to us, as rarely before, man's most heroic and horrendous endeavor.
